Principal Global Investors has appointed Peter Smyth, formerly head of product at AMP Capital Investors, to chief operating officer and head of product Australia.

Principal chief executive Grant Forster said the position was created to facilitate the company's growth off the back of a strong 12 months, particularly in relation to global property securities, emerging market equities and currency management.

Working under Forster, Smyth will be responsible for developing strategy and operational infrastructure to drive business in Australia.

Smyth has over two decades of experience in the industry, holding senior roles including director at Fidelity Investments Australia, head of product at Perpetual Investments, and senior vice president and head of product at BT Funds Management.

"Peter's expertise and experience in product strategy and exceptional track record managing the life cycle of products and sales activities is an asset to Principal Global Investors. I have no doubt that he will support the next step in the evolution of our business and look forward to working with him to achieve this vision," Forster said.
