The SMSF Association has welcomed former KPMG partner, Dana Fleming’s appointment as Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Assistant Commissioner, self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs).

SMSF Association chief executive, John Maroney, said that the appointment sent the right signals to the SMSF sector, praising Fleming’s extensive industry experience in superannuation taxation.

“Her knowledge and experience position her well to assume this key role, and we look forward to continuing the successful strategic partnership we have with the ATO with Dana heading its SMSF work.”

Fleming would bring more than 20 years’ experience in the taxation of super funds and managed investments to the role. Her clients at KPMG included major industry and retail super funds and boutique managed funds.

Maroney also paid tribute to Fleming’s predecessor, Kasey Macfarlane, despite an at-times tense relationship between the SMSF sector and government bodies in the wake of the 2016 Budget reforms to SMSFs.

“She has been crucial to the implementation of the new superannuation legislation, forging the SMSF Association-ATO strategic partnership, and for nurturing the ongoing positive relationship between the SMSF sector and the tax office,” he said.
